Work commissioned as part of Dig Where You Stand

The title of the work is a quote from Robert Burton's 1621 exploration of the causes, symptoms and possible cures of depression in 'The Anatomy Of Melancholy'. A first edition volume of this work is housed as part of a little known collection within the Bolton Library on the Cathedral grounds in Cashel, Co. Tipperary alongside works by Machiavelli, Dante and Swift. Exploring the library and its surrounds, this video reveals medieval manuscripts and countless volumes of 17th, 18th and 19th C literature entombed in the silent space. Despite Bishop Bolton's wish that the rare collection of works should never be moved from the grounds of Cashel Cathedral - in an effort to ensure its safely and preservation, the library will be moved to the University of Limerick in the near future.

In March 2011 a number of participants were invited to engage with a site-specific installation entitled Overkill. Held within a former famine workhouse in Callan, Co. Kilkenny this took the form of a 19th C inspired feast. The engagement itself was not recorded on the night - eye-witness accounts were taken after the event, while the aftermath and leftovers were subsequently adapted as sets in the production of a series of video works.
4.00 Fit For Purpose (Domesticated Dog Portrait) 2011

Referencing the work of 19th Century painter Landseer, this work was part of a series of drawings and video works that appropriate a tendency in Victorian culture to romanticise and anthropomorphise wildlife within a 'staged' narrative or environment. The Victorian exaggeration of life through taxidermy also relates directly to the notion of the uncanny.

This was one of a series of works based around the idea of scavengers. The bird featured in the video is a Red Kite, a scavenger that became extinct in Ireland following the great famine. This bird was re-introduced to this country in 2007 and is now seen to be breeding successfully. This particular bird is female and her name is Grace.
